A note from Dr. Juroska

Please note that the following is an announcement from the Texas Department of Health explaining the symptoms of Salmonella.
There has ONLY been 1 confirmed case of salmonella among our students.  It is important to know that we are satisfied the student DID NOT CONTRACT SALMONELLA AT LILLIAN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, otherwise there would be more confirmed cases.

Someone in our school has been diagnosed with Salmonellosis. This illness is caused by bacteria called Salmonella that get into the intestines by way of the mouth.
The main symptoms are fever and diarrhea, which may last for 2 – 4 days. Stomach pain, nausea, vomiting and headache may also be present.  It usually takes between 6 and 72 hours after contact for a person to become ill.
It can be spread through the feces (stool) of a person who has the bacteria. Some animals such as chickens, turtles, lizards, cats and dogs can also carry the bacteria in their droppings.  Illness may occur when a small amount of these bacteria gets on hands, objects or food and then find a way into a person’s mouth.  It can also be found in food tainted during processing or by mis-handling.
It can be spread as long as it is passed in the stool.  For most persons, the time period for carrying these bacteria may vary.  It can be anywhere from a few days to several weeks, although there are some who may carry it longer.
The most important way to prevent the spread of Salmomellosis is by careful hand washing by everyone. Hands must be washed after using the restroom or changing diapers. Hands must also be washed before handling food, before eating and after handling pets.
If your child gets diarrhea, fever, stomach pains or nausea keep him or her home. Notify your health care provider.  Tell you health care provider about this letter.
Please let your school know if your child gets sick with any of these symptoms.
